In 1991 Jimmy was employed as a Workshop Foreman at Kynoch Fertilizers (Pty) Ltd., but was retrenched mid year. Jimmy’s last day was a Friday – the following Monday morning he received a phone call to present himself at Kynoch as a “Contractor” to do some work. From there Jimmy made the decision to take six months “living expenses”(school fees, bond repayments, lights and water, groceries etc.,) from the “retrenchment package” he received from Kynoch – which in those days was not a lot. He gave himself six months to “make or break”.
After working for about three months doing various repair jobs for Kynoch – Jimmy was approached by Kynoch to buy a truck to assist with delivering fertilizer to various farmers as all Kynoch’s transport needs were either on a driver/owner basis sourced out to various contractors. Not as easy as it sounds – Jimmy had no money to just “buy a truck”. However true to his nature – Jimmy made a plan and used his one and only insurance policy as collateral to buy a second hand Mercedes Benz truck from a cucumber farmer in Warm baths.
So started G&H Transport & Repairs cc. Jimmy continued to work his truck from Kynoch’s premises in Chloorkop whilst Heather ran his office from their son’s bedroom at home.
After a year Jimmy managed to add another two trucks , a second hand International Navistar and a demo model MAN and their offices moved to a yard in Elandsfontein – not very flash but serviceable none the less.
Jimmy then took the decision to invest in tankers and started running “crossborder” to Zambia for ICC carrying emulsion, whilst continuing to carry fertilizer for Kynoch.
In 1999 G&H bought and moved to their current premises in Chloorkop. Jimmy and Heather also brought their sons into the Company and from just Jimmy and Heather the employee status now stands at approximately 140 drivers and 80 staff. The current standing with vehicles is approximately 100 trucks and 140 trailers and tankers. G&H’s client base has also steadily increased and now incorporates contracts with Industry Giants.
